James Baldwin believed that a human being could only be saved by another human being; he said, "I am aware that we do not save each other very often. But I am also aware that we save each other some of the time." He described a space where we can land, a place that feels haunted by our aloneness in the world, where we have an irrepressible impulse to reach out for love. He then offers hope with the idea of what he called "a miracle of coherence and release." The reader is told that they can focus their unsteady attention on this miracle of love. A love strong enough to guide us towards acceptance of our own identity. (Nothing Personal by Baldwin & Avedon)
Carl Rogers said, "Self-worth is the calm recognition that your life matters, even when no one is applauding." This quote offers a glimpse into being worth-conscious when self-worth is its own reward; it also highlights a distinction between worth and esteem. Self-worth is a foundational value; self-esteem is about liking aspects of yourself or appreciating how good something feels (such as applause).
Dr. Glenn P. Doyle shared that "Validation" isn't feel-good pop psychology bullsh*t. Complex trauma damages the nervous system through invalidation of personal needs and humanity. Validation (worth-affirming in WCT) in psychotherapy isn't a warm and fuzzy bonus; it is central to stabilizing and healing our nervous system. @DrDoyleSays
It was a medieval speculative concept to discover the transmutation of base metals into more valuable ones. A new approach to defining alchemy involves combining the traditional idea with a modern enhancement. The term has helped us describe a powerful transformation, such as profound personal growth that may seem magical because the outcome is significantly better than the original state. Becoming worth-conscious is the first step.

Self-worth can be denied or affirmed; you cannot lose it. A lost worth story can be co-created in a system that denies your worth as a person. Then, a pattern of denied self-worth can become a detrimental, but familiar story of lost worth. We want you to remember to ask yourself, when you feel worthless, what are you or anyone else worth less than? We do not believe anyone is worth less than mutual respect, kindness, and basic human decency. (See the worth-conscious blog on our home page for more details.)
Our book on understanding self-worth is scheduled for release in September 2025. We are excited to have you join the book group on Facebook to discuss self-worth. The link to Routledge is on our Book page.
Your truth and worth belong together. In WCT, congruence between truth and worth promotes well-being. The Professional Resources page offers additional materials for mental health professionals. The page titled "Individuals" is for everyone.
The article in the link discusses a technique that helps autistic children develop their inner self-talk, which may enhance their ability to regulate emotions. Therapists are encouraged to preserve the child's self-worth throughout the intervention. https://www.psypost.org/this-self-talk-exercise-may-help-reduce-emotional-dysregulation-in-autistic-children/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook&fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR5MIjxP7u6sCubVoKUJVa6cWuRTaK1L14iSn5n4YdCaVXljzM4JGTX1y5K-JQ_aem_DVt0q95w2tVmpA7cfKPLGg&sfnsn=mo
Information is just data that may not help inform conscious decision-making. In this interview, Anne-Laure Le Cunff discusses a life hack she discovered as a neuroscientist that can help us find the sweetspot between curiosity and ambition. Being conscious is preferred over being on autopilot. https://bigthink.com/series/full-interview/anne-laure-le-cunff/
